The Kashmir Valley sits between the Pir Panjal and the greater Himalaya, with Srinagar built around Dal Lake and the Mughal gardens that step down to it. South of the mountains, Jammu is a plains city of temples and a different climate entirely. The two halves swap the seat of government twice a year.
